The baseline model of Martins dreadnought series
since its inception, the D18 has been used by innumerable
players in a host of musical genres. Unlike the other dreadnoughts
listed, the versatile D18 features a back and sides made of
mahogany, and thus a different sonic signature. Like all of
the instruments in this collection, we subjected this guitar
to a rigorous selection process, which in this case meant
a side-by-side players comparison with a 1950s
vintage D18. The result? The `71 was by far the better guitar,
with a forceful midrange presence that makes it ideally suited
for acoustic lead work.
