In the early mid 1970s, Gibson took advantage
of the continuing popularity of the Les Paul by building reissues
with features from the earliest models of 1950s. Namely,
these features included the fatter 1950s neck profile,
the wraparound bridge/tailpiece, the P-90 single coil pickups,
and the Gold Top finish. Many of these guitars
were modified by their owners at that time by the removal
of the P-90s in exchange for humbuckers. This particular
instrument received Gibson patent-number pickups (the successors
to the legendary PAFs). This guitar has the Les Paul
growl in spades, and there has been talk of switching out
the `buckers for humbucker-sized P-90s.
